NYT Smear
Bob Herbert of the NYT has a column where he presents a Conscientious Objectors word as final. Trouble is, I was there too and closer to the action than Aidan Delgado the mechanic.
The compound where the riot took place, compound 8, was run by my Company, the 870th MP Co. The riot also was an escape attempt. It wasn't just a few stone throwers; the sky was black with throw debris, which effectively suppressed the compound towers from their overwatch duties. The stones being thrown represented a deadly force threat. Some of them were head size. It was only when the riot became a danger of a serious breakout attempt and less than lethal force(rubber shot from M203 and rubber point munitions from 12 GA shotguns) had been applied to no effect was the request for deadly force made. When permission was granted, two soldiers fired on the ring leaders. 3 were killed outright, ending the riot immediately. One more died later and 12 more were wounded. I know both of the soldiers who fired; they are good people and only did what they had to do to keep others from further harm. Given that one of the soldiers was using a M249, it could have been a bloodbath. Both soldiers showed remarkable restraint in picking their targets and only using necesarry force. There was a AR 15-6 investigation and CID also investigated. The shootings were found to be justified and both soldiers were decorated for their actions.
This Delgado guy was a mechanic; he was no where near those compounds. I also highly doubt he "confronted" the SGT who fired; he wouldn't have even known who he was. Different unit, not working anywhere near the compounds.

SGT,
You're also pointed out, via Blackfive, on National Review Online.
Thanks for your input. You must be expecting Mr. Herbert's call any minute now, I'm sure. ;)
Cordially...
Sgt Ted
Thanks for your post. I'm sure there are many other soldiers out there who can debunk what Delgado has said. As for me, I don't need to see it debunked. My son is a Marine who spent 7 months in Husaybah. They were mortared every day, and could not walk the streets without being shot at. But they always showed incredible restraint and followed the ROE to the letter. The terrorists there would shoot at the marines from a crowd of civilians, drop his weapon and blend in, and the marines had to hold their fire. Over and over this happened. They never harrassed the civilians, and let many terrorists get away because it would have meant harming civilians to go after them.
I believe there are true COs in America, but Delgado is not one of them.
He's probably legit as a CO, but the story in the Times sounded almost tailored for them--down to the anecdote about the guy kneeling down and praying before killing some poor Iraqi.
Thanks for this post, and thanks for your service!
Good post.
Thank you for protecting our freedom.
Thanks for the good comments guys. It's nice to know someone else reads my ramblings. :)
Sgt Ted,
Thanks for your post and your service -- getting the word out is essential!
Thank-you for that post.
I am so sick of these one sided stories that MSM outlets like the NYT churns out. It's a real shame that "respectable journalists" like Bob Herbert sink so low as to present the uncorroberated story of one person as the truth.
I came to your blog via the NRO Corner. I will definitly return.
Sgt. Ted. Thanks for keeping us safe. I've linked to your post, and there are other soliders who have told similar stories on my site. Herbert's piece was the most vile thing I've ever read in the NYTimes, and that is saying something.
Sgt,
Glad you put up the post. The more I read about Mr. Delgado's claims the more outlandish they seem.
Can you tell us the date of this incident? Neither you nor Mr. Delgado mentioned one, and since riots occurred on an almost daily basis at Abu Ghraib, it's hard to track down any reporting on this one.
Thanks
Well, it was in October or November and thats about all I remember. It stands out because it was one of the only times we had to use deadly force. Rioting wasn't a daily occurence though.
Was it the incident on 24th Nov 2003? It's listed as part of the Taguba report and it's the closest thing I could find.
Excerpt from 15-6 Investigation on Riot and Shootings at Abu Ghurayb on (24 November 2003):
---------------------------------
...the US Military Police Guard Force at Abu Ghurayb/Baghdad Correctional Facility, (BCF), shot and killed 4 (four) detainees that were aggressively contributing to a prison riot. The prisoners would not comply with ordered commands from guard force personnel to cease and desist, and were threatening to affect a breach of the containment perimeter.
...
Many of the guards in the towers had stated that "the sky was black with rocks" and "I feared for my life and was afraid of a mass breakout."
SGT Ted - you're entirely on target with your description. it was the Ramadan riot towards the end of November. Your statement tracks exactly with what I was monitoring from Shadow TOC, and jives completely with COL Falcone's investigation findings. Delgado is talking out his butt.
Kevin - Yes thats the one. I had forgotten it was Ramadan. I had forgotten about the Taguba 15-6 too. I do remember CID coming thru and interviewing everyone involved and there had been a Brigade 15-6 too I think. We gave CID pictures of the towers that were littered inside and out with great big rocks. Once they saw those, they knew it was a righteous shooting.
Sgt Ted,
First of all, thank you for the real truth from one who WAS THERE.
Thank you for your service and dedication. I love and appreciate all of the men and women who have put your lives on the line for your fellow Americans(Even those a...s who do not appreciate your sacrefice).
I pray fro all of you.
May God bless and be with you all.
Baldilock's Mom
I served in the 870th MP Co for 4 years until 8/2002 and know many of the guys that went over to Iraq. I served with them on AD after 9/11. None of those guys would have fired unless it was necessary. Whatever this Delgado guy said is crap.
