The rise of Huckabee has confirmed one of my nagging doubts about Evangelicals commitment to conservative principles, once you get past the to right to life issue. The Iowa caucus shows that they will jettison all other conservative principles to support a Christian Socialist like Huckabee. The Jesus-Uber-Alles crowd maybe devout, but they aren't conservatives if Huckabee is who they think should be President. But, winning Iowa does not guarantee anything; Bush lost Iowa in 2004.

Also, seeing as how Iowa has gone Democrat the last few Presidential elections, this may be a blip rather than a harbinger.

Mr. Huckabee is clever. He puts forth his policies, such as they are, based on a faith-based understanding of public policy, and if you disagree with his policies, or take a hard shot at them, or at him, he suggests the reason is that you look down on evangelicals. This creates a new fissure in a party already riven by fissures. He has been accused by some in the conservative press of tearing the party apart, but it was being torn apart before he got on the scene. His rise is not a cause of collapse but an expression of it.

He plays the victim well. Others want to "trip him up," but he'll "get my message out there." His foes are "Wall Street-Washington" insiders, elitists. On the "Today" show he said his critics are the type who never liked evangelical Christians. When one of them runs, these establishment types say " 'Oh my gosh, now they're serious, they don't want to just show up and vote, they actually would want to be part of the discussion and really talk about issues that include hunger and poverty and things.' "

This is a form of populist manipulation. Evangelical Christians have been strong in the Republican Party since the 1970s. President Bush and Karl Rove helped them become more important. The suggestion that they are a small and abused group within the GOP is strange. It is as if the Reagan Democrats, largely Catholic and suburban, who buoyed the Republican Party from the late '70s through 2004, and who were very much part of the GOP coalition, decided to announce that Catholics have been abused within the party, and it's time for Christmas commercials with floating Miraculous Medals. Does Mr. Huckabee understand that his approach is making people uncomfortable?

Hell, I am beyond uncomfortable. I am disgusted. Playing the picked on victim is a liberal political tactic, making the political the personal, painting his critics as anti-Christian bigots. Conservatives shouldn't let this guy wrap himself in the Bible to use it as a shield to duck his liberal record as Governor and his pandering and protecting illegal aliens and patronage. That the Iowa NEA endorsed him is a big red flag.

I don't care if he is an evangelist; that isn't the point. He is a social policy liberal, for all intents and purposes. His line above claims that he is the only republican "really talking about poverty and things". What a crock. Conservatives talk about hunger and poverty too. Conservatives recognise that the best solutions to those issues don't rely on Government for the answer. evidently Mr Huckabee does. He might as well be Hillary or Al Gore, claiming that big ol mean Republican fatcats don't care about the poor, but Preacher Huckabee does by golly! Screw that. Screw him. While advocating what seemed to be an "open-door policy," Huck espoused the Golden Rule, saying,

My response? Huck, if I were in another country illegally, I would fully expect its citizens to demand I go home.
But I wouldn't prevail on Huck. This is the man who said that Arkansas needed to cherish diversity in culture and language. He's the man who opposed a ban on providing state services to illegals and supported in-state college tuition rates for them He's the man who criticized an Arkansas measure to require proof of citizenship to vote. Like President Bush, he's a man who would compassionately conserve us into Mexico North.

If you do not live under a rock, you are certainly aware that Mike Huckabee, Republican Presidential Candidate has recently come up in the polls and is now leading the pack in several states. This has been attributed to his "outreach to Conservative Christians", selling himself as someone they can identify with.

The problem with all this is that, while Mike is certainly a Christian, he is by no means a conservative one where government is concerned. It can be argued that is voting record is solidly big government and he has no qualms about trying to raise taxes to achieve his objectives.

After 8 years of Bush, the Younger's "Compassionate Conservatism", which is just another way of saying "JFK Democrat", I would think that the We of the Right would be looking a little closer at what we are replacing him with.

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

The NIE and the Politicized CIA

Much has already been said and written about the covert intel war of the CIA against the Bush administrations policies. What I haven'e seen is a solution to the problem in the long term.

To solve the problem, I think that you need to look at how the CIA came to be.

The OSS was created in WW2, using military, former military and other intel types and had a distinctly military culture and mission. It was a huge success and led to the establishment of the Special Operations Forces in the Military, which usually were disbanded when conflicts ended. JFK made SOF permanent and at the time, they worked closely with the CIA on various and sundry missions and operations in the 60s and 70s. After the Cold War ended, the CIA was cut back and the operational arm fell into disarray, while the intel arm maintained and expanded its personnel, Alot of the beurocracy has been hired out of our "eleite" schools, going back to the OSS.

But, the "elite" schools have been hopelessly mired in anti-American advocacy and instruction as the 60s radicals entrenched in universities throughout America, proving Communist radical Gramsci's theory of gaining control of educational institutions in order to advance Communisms goals in a slow "boil the toad by gradually increasing the heat" method. In intel terms, the Universities have been compromised. Their loyalties of the faculty and some of their graduates, quite frankly, are suspect.

What I think the best practical solution would be to return to the selection of personnel from proven loyal institutions such as the Military to draw personnel from the ranks. One doesn't need a degree in Poli-Sci or "international relations" to be a good analyst. They could continue to draw operatives from the SOF community and look to the Military Intel community for their analysts. To some extent, the civilian law enforcement community could be tapped for both.

Bottom line: The CIA needs to return to its roots in order to get rid of the type of partisan politics as seen in the Valerie Plame bullshit artistry and the most recent NIE report, which has no real merit, other than another hit piece on W, and return it to its primary mission, to develope good intelligence in order to carry out the orders of the duly elected Government they have sworn to serve.

This small story goes to show the casual mendacity and chutzpah of the Clinton Campaign machine.

It was reported on Drudge that the Hillary Clinton stiffed a waitress at a lunch stop. There was a quick press release from HRCs campaign claiming that a $100.00 tip was left. On the face of it, it's hard to tell what the truth is. But, the story linked from NPR points up this:

Esterday(the waitress), speaking to NPR from home later Thursday, said the Clinton campaign staffer who visited the diner apologized to her and said a $100 tip was left on a credit card the day of Clinton's visit. Esterday said the staff member said the money was meant to be shared.

"I explained to her that our credit card machine, you know, doesn't add on the tip," Esterday said. "And she said, 'Well, then, they left a $100 bill there.' And I said, 'Well, it didn't get divided up amongst us, because I had gotten nothing.'

"She just said, 'Well, there was one left,'" Esterday said. "She just kept repeating, 'There was one left.'

After the campaign staffer stopped at the diner Thursday, Esterday said, the $100 tip was a hot topic.

"Two others that had worked with me that day turned around and said, 'We didn't know about any $100 tip,' because they both turned around and said 'We didn't get a part of it.' And they didn't. So, it's like 'OK, where did it go?' That's the mystery question: Where did it go?"

Esterday said it would surprise her if money that was intended to be split among the staff was never shared.

"The ladies that were working that day have been working there for years — some of them for 30 years, some of them for 25 years," Esterday said. "And I've known a lot of these ladies most of my life living here, too. And I can't imagine them pocketing it."

The now familiar pattern of pathological dishonesty and inability to deal with criticism is shown in the ever shifting story of the staffer talking with the waitress. First, it was left on the credit card. But, when it is pointed out that they don't allow tips on the credit card bills, the payment is then said to have been cash, but the campaign can't name anyone who actually left the money. Then when the accuracy of this is questioned, the staffer still insists that a tip was left. Unsaid is the presumption that the waitresses are dishonest backstabbers who screwed their colleagues out of their fair share of tip money.

They've even set up a webpage to spin their denial in what seems to be "protesteth too much" moment than an attempt to set the record straight. Is that pathetic or what? Why don't just admit a mistake and correct it?

Pro-Life Uber Alles?

I haven't written much about the Primary Campaigning mainly because I rejected the early campaigning by the pols. Of course, I haven't written much of anything here, mostly being content to hash out ideas on other blogs.

One of the main issues that rankles me in this primary is the single issue Right to Life types that like to pretend that as long as the candidate is Pro-Life! that he or she is a Conservative. To me, this position is akin to the Kos Crowd proclaiming Joe Leiberman to be a wingnut because he supports the GWOT, despite a 99% liberal voting record in all other areas.

I prefer W to any of his contemporary Democrat party rivals but, in some critical areas, he is most decidedly *not* a conservative, despite his pro-life convictions. He is not a conservative on immigration, his compassionate conservatism is growing entitlement programs and creating new ones. But we knew this when we voted for him; he told us as much. That's tolerable given what the Dems would enact. Personally, I was counting on the Republican controlled Congress to reign him in on the spending. They didn't and it cost them control of both Houses.

Despite Rudy's popularity, there are some rumblings of single issue pro-lifers either running a third party candidate or simply staying at home and watching Hillary! or whatever socialist creature the Dems nominate get the White House.

As someone who held his nose while voting for GHW Bush only to see the Perot koolaid drinkers split the party vote over the "Read my Lips" Betrayal, giving BJ Clinton the top spot, this galls me no end. Some of the preferred pro-life candidates are as liberal as Rudy Giuliani, just in other directions, usually towards entitlement programs or immigration policy, but, I'd show up at the voting booth and happily push the button for them if they were the choice vs the Hildebeast.

To paraphrase USSC Justice Robert Jackson, the Republican party platform is not a suicide pact. If a Republican is going to be better for the Nation than a Democrat, then vote for him. Then, work on moving the Party to develop the type of leaders in the Reagan mold that are more the whole package. Don't sabotage the party that best represents your point of view by enabling the party that doesn't.

The Virginia Tech Shooting will cause those who argue that the War on Terror has resulted in onerous restrictions on usually unnamed civil liberties to call for onerous restrictions, or doing away with outright, the specific 2nd Amendment civil liberty of firearms ownership.

They will ask: Does this not point out the need for more restrictions on firearms ownership?.

They need to understand that V-Tech is a "gun free" campus, which guaranteed that the shooter would not face armed resistance. Not to bag on the cops, but notice that they didn't protect anybody as much as drag the dead and wounded out for the ambulances. The shooter took himself out. What if certain teachers or other responsible persons were armed on campus, besides the Campus police? If the Campus Police are not or cannot be effective in such situations, why are they there?

I will always maintain that self protection is the best protection. Firearm restrictions only disarm the law abiding and make easy victims for predators.

Here's a letter from a soldier currently in Iraq:

Today in the mess hall, where there is usually jovial conversation, there was silence, long faces, and broken spirits... Everyone, to include all American soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen, Iraqi Nationals, Bulgarian Soldiers, etc, etc... was speechless, tired, demoralized and stunned.... all ate in erie silence.....

Last night, while we watched the press conference with the President, there was utter discust, and the common feeling amongst us all that we soldiers are now the loneliest people on Earth.... we fight an enemy over here, and we have a country full of enemies to go home to that are our countrymen. We watched President Bush say his own political funeral, our commander and chief.. as well as ours..... He tried so hard to spin it, but... well.. there is no way to soften such a morale blow.

While you sit and Monday morning quarterback what we work so hard to do for you out here, just know that the spirit of your team is wounded..... YOU liberals, you America have done a great job of demoralizing us... Thank you.

Update: I did a google on the Veterans organization that Coleman quotes; Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). They may be vets but they have been drinking the moonbat koolaid and have their roots in the leftwing Democracy In Action astro-turf organizers that proudly link with Code Pinks "Say No to War toys" anti-military propaganda as well as the usual leftwing woo-woo causes. They also include links to an anti-war documentary that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. I also googled their founder Paul Reickhoff. He has been busy making the moonbat curcuit rounds of Air America, Mother Jones, AlterNet, PBS, NPR, etc. He is a Democrat Party Operative.

I love how these "non-partisan" non-profits regularly slant left in their advocacy, support and linkings. Their site is clearly partisan, despite their claims to the contrary. If they were truly non-partisan, one could expect to find some criticism of the leftwing politicians who have undermined support for the mission and badmouthed the troops, but no such animal is to be found on their site. Some of their founders mouth the moonbat "Bush Lied" garbage with the imprimature of veterans status to give it weight. Their "Take Action" links reek of Democrat Party talking points. They should just call themselves Iraqi/Afghanistan Veterans against the War and have done with it. The IAVA doesn't speak for me.

ORIGINAL POST I saw on Powerline a link to a column in the Minnesota Star Tribune trying to smear Iraq Vets who made an ad supporting the Iraq mission. Crap like this pisses me off, so I wrote him a love note:

Please refrain from commenting on what todays veterans support or do not support. Your ignorance of the situation on the ground in Iraq and your attempt to smear a view contrary to your un-informed, misguided opinion is quite obvious. The ad says the truth; that we are fighting AL QUAEDA in Iraq and that AL QUAEDA was responsible for 9/11. duh. Reading comprehention much? Ken Adelman was NOT the Bush campaign director. The Center for Media and Democracy is putting out bogus info and you bought because you cannot comprehend that the soldiers on the ground who see whats actually going on, as opposed to the daily leftwing propaganda effort by people like you to smear our good names and tell whatever lie you think will work to undermine public support of the war.

You speak of the "swiftboating" of the Iraq war. The SBVFT gathered together to tell their firsthand experiences of serving with John Kerry, which was at odds with his selfserving claims and outright lies about his actual service in Vietnam and also because the media showed no interest in Kerrys' service other than to be a hypocritical echo chamber of his claims while going on a fullout attack on the Presidents service to the point of publishing forged documents on the eve of the election. Because of the leftwing press like you that pimps the negative over the positive in Iraq, the troops are forced to make their own case, which costs money. I saw this post on the Daily Dish and he continues to intermix two separate incidents that occurred at Abu Ghuraib; the alleged officially sanctioned "torture" and the nutbars run amok from the 372d MP Cos night shift that were reported to CID and was under investigation long before CBS got wind of it. The confusion is understandable as this is the MSM's template in order to discredit President Bush and undermine the mission ala Vietnam. What Sullivan doesn't get is that the two were really unrelated. This is proven by the fact that the soldiers charged were all on one shift where supervision was scant and that the orders logs don't support SSG Fredricksons and SPC Graners excuse that they were ordered to do what they did. If what Andrew postulates was correct, then we would have seen more soldiers involved from ALL shifts. There very well may have been questionable or illegal techniques used at Abu Ghuraib, but what Graner, etc were doing wasn't a part of that; they were just being sadists and thought they could get away with it.

Militant Islam is responsible for the actions in response to any defiling of the Koran. Did Christians riot and commit murder and mayhem when Serrano's Piss Christ was unveiled? Did they torch buldings and burn down movie theaters when The Last Temptation of Christ premiered? Was the NY Museum of Modern Art vandalised and their docents killed when a painting of the Virgin Mary covered in elephant dung was showcased?

So why is Newsweek the center of the discussion concerning Muslim reaction to a book getting thrown into a toilet? When a religion is so intolerant of insult that its practitioners become enraged mobs, one is led to question the religion itself.

This is ESPECIALLY so in regard to politically correct notions requiring extra sensitivity towards Islam that are completely absent in how Christianity and the actions of Christians are treated in the popular culture influenced by the left and their partisan MSM water carriers. When a militant Christian kills an abortion doctor, he is to be arrested, prosecuted, denounced and the motives of other Christians are to be questioned and calls for the FBI to investigate conservative Christian organizations are made. But when Islamic militants fly airplanes into buildings and kill 3000+ people, we are told that we need to understand their rage, that the chickens have come home to roost, that the USA needs to be more like Europeans nations and that we must be extra sensitive towards Muslims and we must take care not to insult their religion, despite their bigoted attitudes towards women, gays, Jews and "infidels".

Well, screw THAT! Islam needs to held to account and its practitioners need to be held to civilized WESTERN standards of behavior.

Funny thing about NEWSWEEKS fake but accurate story about Koran desecration. Besides the obviously partizan bias of Isikoffs hit peice on the military and, by extension, President Bush, what is missing is any counter example of the desecration of non-majority religions by Muslims in Muslim dominant countries. Moonbat Central has good commentary on it.

In Asia many Hindu and Buddhist shrines have been vandalized or destroyed by Moslems; Moslems also have a long history of seizing the churches and holy sites of other religions and converting these into mosques. Strange how few of the media airheads who were expressing their rage over Toiletgate never got around to commenting on any of these facts.

Much is made of "extremists highjacking a peaceful religion" when criticism is made of modern Islam. The fact of the matter is that people in mainstream Muslim nations regularly desecrate what other religions consider sacred, often violently and with the intent of driving out non-Islamic peoples and cultures.

NYT Smear

Bob Herbert of the NYT has a column where he presents a Conscientious Objectors word as final. Trouble is, I was there too and closer to the action than Aidan Delgado the mechanic.

The compound where the riot took place, compound 8, was run by my Company, the 870th MP Co. The riot also was an escape attempt. It wasn't just a few stone throwers; the sky was black with throw debris, which effectively suppressed the compound towers from their overwatch duties. The stones being thrown represented a deadly force threat. Some of them were head size. It was only when the riot became a danger of a serious breakout attempt and less than lethal force(rubber shot from M203 and rubber point munitions from 12 GA shotguns) had been applied to no effect was the request for deadly force made. When permission was granted, two soldiers fired on the ring leaders. 3 were killed outright, ending the riot immediately. One more died later and 12 more were wounded. I know both of the soldiers who fired; they are good people and only did what they had to do to keep others from further harm. Given that one of the soldiers was using a M249, it could have been a bloodbath. Both soldiers showed remarkable restraint in picking their targets and only using necesarry force. There was a AR 15-6 investigation and CID also investigated. The shootings were found to be justified and both soldiers were decorated for their actions.

This Delgado guy was a mechanic; he was no where near those compounds. I also highly doubt he "confronted" the SGT who fired; he wouldn't have even known who he was. Different unit, not working anywhere near the compounds.

I'm all for living wills and durable powers of attorney for such incapacitation as being stuck on a breather unable to communicate. I think the phrase "quality of life" is going to be used too much as an excuse to kill those that cannot make the choice for themselves. The Shiavo case seems to be one of a husband using the courts to put his crippled wife to death in lieu of divorcing her and turning her over to the parents care. The detail of him not saying anything about her wishing to not live in such a state until after he got a huge amount of cash in order to CARE FOR HER is a HUGE red flag. That he hired a Newage kook pro-death attorney who channels other severly crippled persons is another. National Review has a good editorial on it.

One of the more aggravating things in watching MSM news coverage of the ME is the automatic lumping of Muslims as one big monolithic block. Kind of like how the MSM treats minorities and other advocacy political groups in the USA. I saw some clown on NBC the other night who claims to have spent two years in Iraq doing news there and he trotted out the "Shiias in the south, Sunnis in the center, Kurds to the north oh my!" conventional wisdom of those who I see as not having much contact with actual Iraqis. Of course, he was framing his news story about how the Iraqi government was in trouble because TWO WHOLE MONTHS after the elections there wasn't a complete government yet. Two years of living in a Bahgdad hotel might lead one to conclude that but I suspect others who speak to actual Iraqis around the country might find something different. He went on with more blather about how the country could split up, with the Shiiah south joining with Iran to form a Sharia State(nevermind that Iraq and Iran were at war for eight years and their no love lost between the two countries), A Kurdistan to the north and the Sunnis controlling the developed center. This has been the CW since Iraq was declared a "quagmire" by the MSM shortly after Bahgdad fell. Again this ignores what alot of Iraqis actually think and desire.

Having been there for one year less than this supposed reporter, but having been in closer contact to a variety of Iraqis, I found that they are more nationalistic than religiously oriented in their political views, even the devout Muslims. Americans tend to a distrustful view of Shiias because of their dominance in Iran and the perception that they support the sort of Islamic State represented by the revolution that overthrew the Shah back in the 70's. Indeed my views of Shiiah Muslims were largely shaped by those events as I came of age during the hostage crisis, casting my first ever vote for Ronald Reagan because I knew he would put the hurt on Iran if they didnt release the hostages.

It wasnt until I was living on a poultry farm outside of Karbala with the 3/7 Marines of the 1st MEF that I found out that the Shiia majority there were actually failry pro American, aside from some resentful shit disturbers like Muqtada Al Sadr, who was trying to consolidate power and make a name for himself by "standing up to the American Oppressors". You see, the main difference that I have seen between Sunni and Shiiah sects of Islam is that the Shiiahs see a religious duty to over throw oppressive governments. The top Shiiah Mullahs in Iraq also desire a separation of religious and political policy. This has been the position of Al Sistani, the top Shia cleric in Iraq who is an Iranian who fled to Iraq during the Iranian Islamic Revolution. If any branch of Islam has the potential to undergo a reformation in respect to human rights, I see the Shiia being the best able to do so.

But back to my point about the clueless MSM and their boilerplate ideas and attitudes towards Iraqi Muslims desiring a Sharia state. I saw on Powerline a news bit on a poll taken in Najaf, the most holy city for Shiias, was published in an Iraqi newspaper. It confirms what I learned on the streets in that part of the country and utterly refutes the party line of a still clueless Big City Liberal media culture about events and attitudes in Iraq, who seem to be locked in a negative mentality towards anything that might make President Bush look good. Thus they ignore anything with doesn't fit in their mold if "Iraqi Quagmire/Civil War/Sharia State" reporting.

Donald Rumsfelds Town Hall Speech

Yes I was AWOL for some time here. My own unit is being mobilized for an OIF rotation so I've been kept busy. I won't have to go with them as I have hit my 24 month cap and my wife needs me a bit more than the Army does right now. But on with my ramblings...

I got an email oh ten or so days ago with the draft text of Defense Secratary Rumsfelds remarks for a Town Hall speech he gave at the Pentagon on March 18th, on the two year anniversary of our liberation of Iraq. Here it is:

Good morning. Thank you for coming.

March 19th will mark two years to the day since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I'd like to take a few moments to talk about all of the things that have changed in Iraq since that day, and about the great sweep of freedom moving across that region, and what it means to our country.
But first, let me say that the positive changes underway could not have taken place without the hard work and dedication of America's men and women in uniform, their families, and the efforts of all of you who have devoted your lives to our nation's defense. I want you to know that we are grateful -- and your country is grateful -- for your able service.

A few weeks ago, a Staff Sergeant with the 1st Cavalry Division received the Silver Star for heroism for rescuing his trapped comrades from a burning Bradley Fighting Vehicle. At his medal ceremony in Baghdad, William Thomas Payne, of Benford, Oklahoma, asked his commanding officer if he might depart from tradition. He wanted the medal to be pinned on him by his proud dad, a civilian DoD employee, who was also on duty in Iraq.

The story is a useful reminder of the many civilian and military personnel who are risking their lives every day to help build a more peaceful future in Iraq, and to eliminate a threat to the civilized world.

Those folks are doing important and noble work. Indeed, when one thinks of Iraq today, compared to what it was just two short years ago, the changes are truly remarkable. Think of what the Coalition faced back then:

* Saddam Hussein and his vicious sons ruled a regime that had twice invaded its neighbors, a regime that paid rewards to the families of suicide bombers;

* Had defied 17 U.N. Security Council resolutions;
* Regularly fired at U.S. and British aircraft and crews; and that
* Looted his country of billions, building lavish palaces while Iraqis suffered starvation.

The many opponents of the regime were forced to whisper their dissent, ever fearful of the midnight "knock on the door" from Saddam's secret police. Other Iraqis who had received "knocks on their door" were among some 400,000 men, women and children callously tossed into the hundreds of mass graves discovered across that country.

In Iraq two years ago, a dangerous threat had gathered. And that threat was confronted. Through an unprecedented combination of speed, precision and flexibility, U.S. forces, with Coalition support, seized Baghdad, having marched farther and faster than any armed force in military history.

And they did this while:

* Avoiding massive civilian casualties;
* Averting a refugee crisis; and
* Preventing Iraq from firing Scud missiles at neighboring countries to ignite a region-wide war.

Since the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Coalition has engaged in a test of wills with a savage enemy determined to derail Iraq's progress. The extremists have beheaded aid workers and children. They have attacked symbols of hope. And they tried to make Iraq's election day one of bloodshed and terror.

But if their goal was to force the Coalition into retreat, their mission failed. In the words of President Bush, "the enemy sought to test America's resolve -- and found it firm."

The same can be said of the Iraqi people. The Iraqi security forces successfully protected five thousand polling places. Millions of Iraqi voters marched defiantly past signs that threatened, "You vote, you die."

And day by day, the Iraqi people are building a future that safeguards the liberty that their citizens deserve and on which the world's security increasingly depends.

History teaches that political and economic freedom go hand in hand. Today, unleashed from Baathist control:

* The Iraqi economy is growing;
* Property values are rising;
* Refugees are returning; and
* Foreign investment is increasing.

Indeed, today, in the heart of the Middle East, Iraq is a country offering freedom and opportunity in place of what was a cauldron of tyranny and terror.

In the last two years, from Afghanistan and Iraq to Ukraine and the streets of Lebanon and elsewhere, we have seen again and again that the great sweep of human history is for freedom -- and we are on history's side.

We know that freedom and opportunity are the surest antidotes to extremism.
Extremist ideologies suffer when governments such as Afghanistan's protect women and imprison terrorists, rather than protecting terrorists and imprisoning women.

Extremist ideologies suffer when millions of Iraqis vote in defiance of the dictates of Zarqawi and bin Laden. And the enemy's extremist ideology will meet its end when the wider Middle East sheds itself of tyranny and violence and carves out a future of tolerance.

As we join the Iraqi people in remembering this important anniversary, we might also take a moment to remember another. Sixty years ago this month, American forces fought on the island of Iwo Jima in one of the last and bloodiest battles of the Second World War.

During a month of brutal fighting, some twenty-five thousand Americans were killed or wounded. Those who fought in that conflict not only contributed to a great military victory, they helped to unleash a wave of freedom that transformed tyrannies to democracies, and enemies into friends.

Today, America's men and women in uniform stand on the shoulders of those heroes who fought at Iwo Jima and the other great battles for freedom in World War II. And just as surely, tomorrow's heroes will stand on the shoulders of those who have freed the people of Afghanistan and Iraq, and those who are dealing crippling blows to the extremists who still threaten our Nation.

One day the history of Operation Iraqi Freedom will be written. Though early chapters of that history might tell of that struggle's great hardships -- and it has been hard -- its final chapters will record historic achievements -- the demise of a leading terrorist state and the spread of freedom throughout the region.

All of us in this building, gathered in this room, or listening across the world carry on our mission in memory of all those who have given their lives to the cause of freedom, to the wounded who demonstrate great courage every day, and to all of their families who support our Servicemen and women with their love and support.

And we promise them this: our commitment to their unfinished work.

With the fall of Saddam came Ghaddafis sudden smell-the-coffee turn around on his nuclear ambitions. But most recently, with the successful Iraqi election, there has indeed been a rise of the Arab street. But it has been in the opposite direction of that predicted by the usual leftwing moaners. The PLA has responded to a recent Tel Aviv bombing by arresting 2 terrorists and there wasn't the usual street celebrations or martyr pictures carried by the mob. The Lebanese have responded to a Syrian sponsored assassination with street protests that have forced the Syrian backed Government to resign and Syria to wothdraw their troops from Lebanon. Egypts Musharef has been forced by international pressure to actually include opposition candidates on the ballot.

While the ultimate results won't be clear for some time, this does show that President Bush is right in his Jeffersionian foreign policies which recognize that the human desire for freedom from oppression cannot be crushed and must be supported by other free nations. Since WW2, Many Middle Eastern countries have been under the boot of assorted thugs and their people are responding predictably. Once again, freedom is on the march and once again, leftists and their liberal Democrat enablers are on the wrong side of history.

I've been involved in a running word battle over at the Anti-Chomsky Blog. The obtuse arrogance of leftists is never better on display than the comments left by Chomskys orcs. They automatically charge that since conseratives oppose the leftist drivel put forth by Chomsky that we are FOR certain oppression such as past support to Pinochet and our current support of Saudi Arabia. No where have I ever said I support any repressive regimes. In fact, I was very happy to take part in freeing Iraq from Saddam as it sent a message to the rest of the ME regarding their need for reform, both religiously and politically. Some will get the carrot, some will get the stick and some may change from within.

It is true that the cold war dynamic was an extension of the type practised in WW2. The bext example is Churchill's saying that he would make a deal with the devil himself to defeat Hitler. That the USA used realpolitik policies of the cold war era and supported right wing dictatorships opposed to Communism is no justification for Marxist inspired brutality whatsoever. In fact, the lesson to be drawn from that is that supporting dictators will come back to bite us, with the most glaring example of post WW2 US policy in the Middle East. I find it heartening that conservative leaders, led by President Bush, have actually learned from this lesson and are committed to change for the better in dictatorial regimes which the US formerly supported towards anti-Communist ends.

In contrast, the left end of the spectrum has gone through no such change of heart or policy. Instead they continue to indulge in excusing and justifying the ongoing brutility and repression of the remaining Communist regimes(Cuba, China and Vietnam)and resurgent police state socialists like Chiles' Hugo Chavez. They have even gone to more of an extreme in their support and finding common cause with the various Islamofascist deathcult movements we are currently fighting simply because these groups are attacking "western Imperialism". Hence we get the "freedom fighter" moral equivalence drivel all over again, seemlessly shifted from the USSR, Castro, Che, etc. to Osama Bin Laden, Zarqari, the PLO, Hezzbollah, etc. while ignoring and denying the real totalitarianism that such movements represent. But, then again, the left has never been for what they claim to represent; freedom, democracy and individualism.

"All the media keeps talking about is how happy the Iraqis are, how high turnout was, and how "freedom" has spread to Iraq. I had to turn off CNN because they kept focusing on the so-called "voters" and barely mentioned the resistance movements at all. Where are the freedom fighters today? Are their voices silenced because some American puppets cast a few ballots?

I can't believe the Iraqis are buying into this "democracy" bullshit. They have to know that the Americans don't want them to have power, because they know that Bush is in this for the oil, and now that he finally has it he's not going to let it go. This election is a charade. The fact is that the Iraqis have suffered during the past two years more than any people on earth at the hands of the American gestapo. Maybe they're afraid and felt they had to vote. That's the only way I can explain it to myself.

OR--I just thought of this--maybe they're smiling because they're using the Americans own game to defeat them. They're voting in candidates who they know will widen the resistance, take the fight to the streets, and finally drive the occupying forces out of their country. Perhaps they're smiling because--right under the American's noses--they're planting the seeds of a bigger and more effective resistance movement. Wouldn't that be fitting? Use *'s own tools against them?

We can only pray that this is the case. Becuase if it's not--and if the Iraq vote is seen as a success that spread "freedom"--the world is screwed. Bush's inaugural speech left little doubt that he has other countries on his list to spread "freedom" to. They will be his next targets, and the world will burn because of it.

Let's hope the resistance got voted in, or if not, they only increase the fight and take down those who betrayed their country today by voting in this fraud election."

Now it seems that Andrew Sullivan is calling anyone who disagreees with his opinions on any accusations of torture a "pro-torture" individual. He needs to un-wad his panties and recognize the fact that when any of these allegations come to light they come under intense investigations and offenders are prosecuted when the EVIDENCE shows that torture or abuse actually occurred. Based on what I've read at his site, ANY allegations of abuse or torture by any random Muslim are concrete evidence of said acts and are to be DIRECTLY attributable to the President Bushes Officially Sanctioned Torture Policy, which ignores any rule of evidence that I know of. The fact of the matter is that the cultures that are majority Muslim countries are often quite brutal. When I was in Karbala, Iraq, we dealt regularly with the "Hawzah"; the local Shia Religious Police, who were run by Muqtada Al Sadr, the radical anti-American son of the late Grand Ayatolla Sadr. Sadr is in bed with Iran and used the local Mosques and Shrines to store weapons and operations posts. They would bring "offenders" down to the police station, usually beaten, for crimes such as petty theft, selling booze, kissing in public, unauthorized dating often without any evidence. Due to their lack of true civil authority granted by law, they operated on a tolerated basis because Muqtada Sadrs ability to roust up a mob and his ability to keep the peace, when it suited him. Eventually, their excesses were recognized for what they were and they became outlawed and we began arresting them. We also took into protective custody young women who had been threatened with death from their own families for dating the wrong guy or kissing in a mosque.

When we left Karbala, there was an uneasy truce between Coalition Forces and Al Sadr. The Battalion CDR of the unit that replaced us attempted to disarm some of Sadrs armed thugs outside the peaceful Shrine and was killed along with a Staff Sergeant in a firefight two weeks after we left. hmm that just kinda came out...

Anyway, this kind of brutality is everyday living over there. Its basis is, unfortunately, Islamic. Until that religion undergoes some MAJOR reforms, it will continue to foster racism and death.

Having been at Abu Ghuraib during the time period of the abuses, it's good to finally see someone who wasn't there get it straight. We heard about these acts when the CID came down, investigated and arrested the clowns involved. NO ONE in the CIC knew what was going down in the wee hours at that place.
The ensueing media circus, which was aided and abetted by Fredricksons lawyers attempting to try the case in the press by blaming his superiors and trying to pin it on Bush/Rumsfeld was nothing more than a political hit. Fredricksons guilty plea shows the veracity of that; but the damage was done with a press eager to find anything in order to bring down the administration.

WaPo: 10 Errors about Memogate in One Paragraph has a great fisking of the farce of defending the Rathergate Bush AWOL story in the Washington Post that is artfully weasel-ish in its construction. Point # 14 of the WAPO paragraph is the only thing with which I disagree; Conservatives, or anyone else interested in truth and accuracy WERE handed a weapon, in fact a LOADED weapon, in that CBS news did their fact check, disregarded their experts, lied about what their experts said and ran the story anyway. Going with that fraud of a story is like a 7 point buck walking up to a hunter during deer season with a "SHOOT ME HERE" sign duct taped to his head and handing the hunter a loaded rifle; they were ASKING for a virtual beatdown. There was no need for Karl Rove whatsoever. I think Dan Rather was crying for help in his addiction to leftwing nonsense like the Bush AWOL story.

Despite the MSM mining all of 1LT Bushes attendance/pay records, dental files etc, there's is no proof whatsoever of him being AWOL. In fact, Bushes records refute the AWOL charge in and of themselves, as his Commander would have to list him as AWOL on the attendance records for that to be so. Having spent 20+ years dealing with such attendance records and actual-for-real AWOL charges gives me confidance in my statements here. The forged memos are a red herring because, even if they weren't forged, they still do not support a charge of AWOL. The only official document that could support that charge are the pay and attendance records and a charge sheet; the former refutes the charge outright while the latter doesn't exist because it never happened. And no, unsubstantiated accusations by leftist malcontents do not constitute "proof". 1LT Bush missed some drills and his commander allowed him to make them up, which is the CO's prerogative. Case Closed.

...At least for me, that is. Welcome to my completely unknown brand new shiney Blog. Its like having a brand new car in your garage that no one can see or will likely see.

Some back ground on myself up front here (I'll make a bio and other good stuff as soon as I figure out how): I am a lifer in the US Army, currently a senior NCO working full time in the California Army National Guard. I have been deployed twice since 9/11; once stateside and a tour in Iraq. There'll be more on that as this experiment unfolds. My hobbies and interests have been writing, music, modern warfare, computers/computer gaming, history, politics and political discussion. I am a charter member of the VRWC opposed to the mindless, reactionary Leftism that has made the Long March on our cultural institutions and my views will reflect this as time goes on. I will also be learning from fellow readers as I post up whatever interests me. Fun times as who knows what this blog will become if it doesnt die due to my time being eaten up by Life.
